At PCA, we know the importance of providing non-offending parents and other caregivers with the tools that they need to support victims of child sex abuse.
We also know the power of education in prevention and awareness.

Spotlight on Caregiver Support Group | What to Expect

  • Week One | Beginning Our Journey Together

    To begin the creation of a safe and healthy group environment in which participants will gain knowledge and share concerns and to acknowledge and validate their feelings along their healing journey

  • Week Two | Overview of Child Sexual Ause & Sexual Development

    To  establish a foundation of knowledge about child sexual abuse that can be built upon in following sessions and dispel misunderstandings and myths about sexual abuse that may be contributing to participants’ feelings of shame, guilt, and isolation; Discussion of sexual development- Typical vs Problematic Sexual Development

  • Week Three | How Abuse Affects Children, Teens and their Families; Difficult Child Behaviors and Parenting Challenges

    to help caregivers understand the effects of abuse on children and teens in the context of normal developmental stages and issues; as well as the effect on siblings and partners; to identify common behavioral responses to sexual abuse, and to increase caregivers’ skills in handling these behaviors appropriately;

  • Week Four | Coping & Communication

    To help caregivers develop coping strategies and communication skills to be able to handle their own emotional reactions and to help their children;

  • Week Five | Dealing with the Outside World

    to explore the various sources of stress and support in caregivers’ lives and provide information to help caregivers navigate the systems that become involved following a disclosure; and

  • Week Six | Moving into the Future

    To provide closure for group participants and instill confidence and hope for the future of their families.

  • After the Program

    At the end of group all participants receive a ‘self-care’ toolkit with items to help support and promote self-care for themselves.  


    Additionally, they receive age appropriate books that further elaborate on topics discusses in group like how to support your child after disclosure and how to start body image/ safety conversations as a few examples.
